We've been talking about refugee sponsorship because of the news from Syria. Many of our feel moved to get involved. On Sunday, November 29, we've invited a guest speaker for our annual Social Justice & Advocacy Sunday.
Ian McBride, executive director of AURA - will join us for the Sunday service to walk us through how we could respond in support of resettlement of refugees in Canada. Should we, as a parish, sponsor a refugee family? Or should we invite our neighbours or other faith groups to join us in a community-wide initiative?
We've had several discussions, and we already have some idea what is needed. We know we would need to raise money, and we've also heard that we should not underestimate the sustained volunteer commitment we would need from the beginning right through to a year after the sponsored refugees arrive. With our eyes opened, we would like to proceed.
We would like to invite our neighbours and friends who have a heart for this project to join us.
Come and learn the background. AURA is a Sponsorship Agreement Holder, and works directly with Citizenship and Immigration Canada to settle refugees. Formerly known as Anglican United Refugee Alliance, AURA has expertise in helping congregations through the resettlement process. We also invite other faith groups to join us. There will be a community meeting immediately following the service to answer our questions and to point us towards next steps.
We welcome your part as we seek to work locally to do good and make a difference in our world. In a time where there are so many refugees, we intend this to be one important way that we respond together.
