"The Pirates of Penzance" is such a timeless comic opera that a revival of it featuring rock stars and staged in Central Park, New York City in the 1980s won many awards, and a movie featuring Kevin Klein and Angela Lansbury took cinema fans by storm.

Gilbert's plot revolves around an English lad who was apprenticed by mistake to a band of pirates; his nursery maid who later falls in love with him; pirates who, being orphans, capture ships that seem always to be manned by orphans and so are set free; and a police force that specializes in trembling. Topping off this topsy-turvy romp is a Major General with outdated military knowledge but an exemplary command of "matters vegetable, animal and mineral".

Sullivan's music combines hilarious patter songs with glorious melodies. "Pirates" is a great evening's entertainment in the hands of the highly talented cast of St. Anne's MADS - their 56th annual G&S production.
